Equine Therapy
Equine Therapy
At Divinity Recovery, Inc., we offer equine therapy as a modality of therapy for clients. Goals of equine therapy include helping clients develop skills such as emotional regulation, responsibility, and self-confidence. Designed for clients of all ages, equine therapy has been shown to help treat a wide variety of mental health issues. It addresses both physical and psychological concerns associated with a diagnosis.
What is Equine Therapy?
Equine therapy, also called equine-assisted psychotherapy or horse therapy, is an experiential type of mental health treatment that involves a client interacting with horses. The client assists in activities involved in horse care such as grooming, feeding, and walking a horse while being supervised by a mental health professional. Equine therapy can be used to treat a wide variety of mental health issues, such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, addiction, and ADHD. Equine therapy has been shown to have a positive effect on destructive relationship habits that have developed. It has also been shown to help with behaviors that compromise a client’s health and safety.
How Does Equine Therapy Work?
Equine therapy in this regard typically involves both a psychologist and a horse trainer, who can sometimes be the same person. Horses have been chosen for this modality of therapy partially because of their gentle nature, and partially because of their ability to withstand a great deal of distraction. Typically, a client will start off petting, grooming, and feeding a horse. Over time, the client will build up to walking or leading the horse alone or with the trainer. Equine therapy is said to work because of horses’ natural ability to sense human emotional expressions and needs. They are patient, perspective and attuned to different human emotions, which gives them the ability to mirror human moods in a nonjudgmental way. As the horse and client bond, self-awareness grows, and emotional healing will often take place.
