Dialectical Behavioral Therapy

At Divinity Recovery, Inc., we offer dialectical behavioral therapy as a modality of treatment for our clients. Dialectical behavioral therapy is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy. It focuses on teaching clients to live in the moment, develop healthy coping skills, improve relationships, and regulate their emotions.

What are Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Strategies?

There are four main strategies that are taught to clients in dialectical behavioral therapy. The first of these four strategies is mindfulness. Mindfulness teaches the client to focus on the present by tuning in to what is going on inside of them, as well as what is happening around them in a way without judgement. This skill is very helpful in slowing down negative thoughts and emotions to allow the client to use their healthy coping skills. The second of the four strategies is distress tolerance. Learning about distress tolerance can help the client accept themselves and their current circumstances. The third strategy taught in dialectical behavioral therapy is interpersonal effectiveness. This helps the client learn to become more assertive in a relationship while still maintaining a healthy and positive relationship. The client will learn to communicate more effectively, deal with difficult people, and respect themselves and others. Lastly, the client will learn how to regulate their emotions. Emotion regulation allows the client to navigate difficult or strong emotions in a more effective way.

Is Dialectical Behavioral Therapy Right for You?

While mostly researched for its benefits on clients with borderline personality disorder, dialectical behavioral therapy has been found to be beneficial for a variety of mental health conditions. You may benefit from dialectical behavioral therapy if you suffer from any of the following conditions: ADHD, bipolar disorder, an eating disorder, an anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, OCD, PTSD, or a substance abuse disorder. Dialectical behavioral therapy is great for people who have frequent thoughts of self-doubt, wanting to self-harm, or who battle any kind of addiction or compulsive behavior. This type of therapy can be beneficial in addiction treatment as well.
